Where are you based at the moment (who do you work for)?

I am based in Sydney working for a formwork contractor, BKH Group

In what year did you complete your honours degree?

1996

What path did you follow before ending up with your current company?

I worked in Cape Town for 3 years as a project manager (PM) for a developer / builder before returning to PE for a 1-year contract again for a developer / builder. I then relocated to London where I worked for a main contractor for 18 years working from an Assistant PM to Senior PM. I finally relocated to Sydney 4 years ago, and have been working for BKH as a PM and now General Manager.

What is your current position and what does the role entail?

General Manager, which entails overall management of the company, from new business development and estimating through contract negotiation and award. The role also includes setting up new projects, managing overall design and systems, and advising and mentoring site teams.

What advice would you give a current construction management student?

Be open to travel and work. There is a lot of great experience to be gained working abroad.

What was your favourite module?

Most of the technical- and structures-related modules.

Who was your favourite lecturer?

I enjoyed all my subjects, lectures, and lecturers. No favourites here!

What are your plans for the next 5 to 10 years?

I have now settled in Sydney and am looking forward to exploring and enjoying this part of the world. Work wise, I am enjoying the company that I am with and look forward to expanding the countries and states that we are working in.
