Age 25

Where are you based at the moment (who do you work for)?

Kalmar Construction Ltd, Auckland, NZ

In what year did you complete your honours degree?

2016

What path did you follow before ending up with your current company?

Throughout my university career I did VAC work for Techni Construction, where I was able to gain good practical knowledge of the construction industry. It also gave me the opportunity to use my theoretical knowledge on-site. Throughout my Honours year I was looking for work overseas. I heard great things about the construction boom in New Zealand and managed to land a Site Supervisor role with Kalmar.

What is your current position and what does the role entail?

The beginning of 2017 my career started as a fit-out Supervisor, where I looked after all the defects of a 259 multi-residential apartment complex, called Sugartree Stage 2. This was the 2nd phase out of 3 phase development. During my time on stage 2, I also managed to get some 2nd fix fit-out experience. At the beginning of last year 2018, I was afforded the opportunity to be the Façade Manager for Sugartree Stage 3, which comprises of 289 apartments. The role comprises of managing and coordinating external works of the building eg. cladding, window joinery, balcony works, waterproofing, sealant work and roofing.

What advice would you give a current construction management student?

As a young professional it is extremely important that you pay attention to detail. Get involved with the guys who carry out the work, it helps build relationships and you end up learning more than you would expect. Everyday on-site is a bit unpredictable. Therefore, it is good to be transparent. Having a good understanding of what is important and what is critical is very important because sometimes the line is so fine, and you can be pulled in all different directions if you don’t prioritise work correctly. Be prepared to work hard and you will be rewarded. Construction is a fun industry, because everyday you learn something new.

What was your favourite module?

I enjoyed all the construction modules. They were well structured, taught me a lot of what I know and use today on-site.

Who was your favourite lecturer?

John, Brink, Chris and Katrina

What are your plans for the next 5 to 10 years?

My 5-year plan is to obtain New Zealand citizenship and during this time gain experience as a project manager on jobs that vary in size and complexity. I don’t really have a 10-year plan, but I do know that I always want to enjoy my job and take every opportunity that is given or thrown in my direction and work as hard as possible to achieve success and happiness.
