I am currently employed by Industrial Services Group: Engineering Division, a company based in East London.

What path did you follow before ending up with your current company?
Upon graduation, I applied for graduate programmes in various construction firms locally and internationally.
What is your current position and what does the role entail?
I am a graduate employee. We are currently constructing a plastic waste recycling plant in East London. This ground breaking plant will recycle plastics and convert them to oils, waxes and solvents. I am tasked with the setting out and installation of pressurised vessels, allocating the required resources to complete a particular task within the stipulated time frame. I constantly liaise with project manager to provide progress updates and assist compiling monthly progress claims, with the quality assurance manager to ensure strict quality guidelines are adhered to during the installation of the pressurised equipment and also, and lastly, with the maintenance division to outline method statements regarding the installation (and removal) of equipment installed.
What advice would you give a current construction management student?
Attend CMSS events, they are a great networking opportunity! If you did not understand a concept in class, ask your lecturer and/or your student assistant. Your lecturers will help you, but you need to ask for help for them to assist you. Seek for vacation work, experience gained in a few weeks on site puts some of your course content into perspective.

That’s a tough one. The Department of Construction Management has the best lecturers on campus!
What are your plans for the next 5 to 10 years?
In the short term, I intend to learn as much as I can from my colleagues to gain valuable experience that will help me grow (both as individual and a team player) and increase my employability. In the long term, I intend to use my past experiences guide me further my career in the corporate world and/or seek entrepreneurship opportunities.
