Age 58

Where are you based at the moment (who do you work for)?

I live in Somerset West, and my business is in Cape Town, of which I am a director, and shareholder (www.keyprojects.co.za) for the past 16 years.

In what year did you complete your honours degree?

1989

What path did you follow before ending up with your current company?

Contracting for the first 13 years, project management in the United Kingdom for 7.5 years for British Airports Authority (BAA), and then development and project management, predominantly luxury residential buildings in Cape Town and the surrounds.

What is your current position and what does the role entail?

Director, and shareholder of my development and project management firm, which entails a range of development and project management interventions.

What advice would you give a current construction management student?

Your chosen career path is highly sought after in an industry that is critically short of skills. Do not be led to think career progression is linear in a hierarchical industry. Exponential growth is achievable by actively managing your career path.

What was your favourite module?

Management subjects in the latter part of the degree.

Who was your favourite lecturer?

Prof Eksteen

What are your plans for the next 5 to 10 years?

Ramping down with project management and working for developer clients, undertaking my own developments, and shifting my focus to a sister company (www.propensure.co.za) that has grown since establishing it in 2013.
