What path did you follow before ending up with your current company?
I was lucky enough to be employed by a construction firm based in Worcester after completing my BSc (Honours) (Construction Management). I had the job title of Junior Site Foreman on a rebuild / restoration project in a remote town known as Wupperthal. Working my way up in the firm, I was soon promoted to a Junior Project Management position. After working in Worcester, I decided to relocate to Cape Town and take on a new role as a Project Manager (PM) for a Security and Fire detection installation firm.
My career moves certainly gave me exposure to different industries and their requirements. I found this very helpful as it allowed me to better manage various stakeholder groups on projects during my career.
What is your current position and what does the role entail?
Currently I am employed as a Project Engineer at ABInBev (SAB), Newlands. I am also running a project for ABInBev Namibia as a Project Implementation Lead. My role entails the successful planning, execution and close-out of CAPEX projects within the various Brewery departments.
What advice would you give a current construction management student?
Vacation work is extremely important. If you are privileged enough to record vacation work undertaken for a few firms on your CV you are sure to stand out from the rest.
Complete your Honours. It may seem daunting at first, but the rewards are endless.

What are your plans for the next 5 to 10 years?
Achieve my Project Management Professional (PMP) certification with the Project Management Institute (PMI) and continue to develop my project management knowledge and skills. I intend to travel, acquire more property, and to continue to live a balanced lifestyle.
