Age 34

Where are you based at the moment (who do you work for)?

I am based in Johannesburg, and I work for the Gauteng Department of Infrastructure Development.

In what year did you complete your honours degree?

2017

What path did you follow before ending up with your current company?

I followed the Construction Project Management route, initially as an Intern Construction Project Manager (CPM). I then registered as a Candidate CPM before registering as a Professional CPM. These roles were served in the National Department of Public Works, which I joined immediately after graduating with Honours in Construction Management at the then Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU).

What is your current position and what does the role entail?

I am currently a Professional CPM. This role entails the full services of a CPM (as per the SACPCMP’s scope of services). My current role is primarily in the development of capital infrastructure for the Department of Health in Gauteng province.

What advice would you give a current construction management student?

Be more involved in extra-curricular activities. Being a former Construction Management Student Society Vice-Chairperson enhanced my employability. The skills you acquire through such involvement and the related commitments sets you apart and equips you with the necessary ‘soft’ and interpersonal skills that will help you in the future.

What was your favourite module?

I do not recall the module codes, but it was Construction Management 4 (Honours level), Professional Practice, and some law modules.

Who was your favourite lecturer?

Prof. John Smallwood, who was also my supervisor for my Treatise.

What are your plans for the next 5 to 10 years?

I plan on being a Chief CPM or Director. I want to be in the spheres of policy making within the government structures. I also wish to expand my property management / development start-up.
