Age 31

Where are you based at the moment (who do you work for)?

I am currently based in Eswatini (Swaziland) and I run my own company that mainly focuses on residential construction and refurbishment of commercial buildings.

In what year did you complete your honours degree?

I completed my degree in 2017.

What path did you follow before ending up with your current company?

After completing my graduation, I joined Industrial Services Group (ISG) in East London, South Africa, as a graduate employee. I was hired for a project in East Londons Industrial Development Zone, where we successfully constructed the first-ever plastic up-cycling plant. The company was impressed with my work ethic, and therefore, they offered me a job as a site agent. We completed several projects for East London IDZ, Mercedes Benz South Africa, and private clients.

What is your current position and what does the role entail?

My current position is company director. My role (together with my business partner) is to source work for the company and ensure the timely execution of projects.

What advice would you give a current construction management student?

Make sure to attend all the lectures and complete all the assessments. Also, keep an eye for vacation work opportunities as they can help you put your coursework into perspective and gain a better understanding of what you are learning and why. Attending CMSS events is also a great platform to network with industry stakeholders. Remember that hard work and perseverance always pay off in the end.

What was your favourite module?

KRS401 Construction Management Treatise 4

Who was your favourite lecturer?

In no order, Chris, John, and Katharina. Their open-door policy and willingness to help / advise students really helped me during my student days.

What are your plans for the next 5 to 10 years?

In the short term, I plan to pursue my master's degree. In the long term, I aim to expand my network, which I believe will lead to increased business opportunities for my company and exponential growth within the construction industry in Eswatini.
